UN Security Council to discuss ICJ ruling in Israel genocide case

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has instructed Israel to prevent acts of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza but did not explicitly call for a ceasefire.

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is set to convene next week to discuss the ICJ’s decision. Algeria, representing the Arab group on the council, called for the meeting and aims to give a binding effect to the ICJ’s pronouncement. While the ICJ emphasized the need for Israel to prevent genocidal acts and allow aid into Gaza, it did not explicitly demand an end to the ongoing conflict. The Palestinian ambassador to the UN, Riyad Mansour, suggested that a ceasefire is necessary for the requested measures to take place. The UNSC, historically divided on the Israeli-Palestinian issue, is anticipated to face discussions on an immediate truce proposal by Algeria. The United States, a staunch ally of Israel, has previously vetoed resolutions calling for a ceasefire, despite international pressure. Israel, in response to the ICJ ruling, rejected it and reiterated its commitment to defending itself while adhering to international law.
