Police defuse time bomb in train at Karachi Cantt Station, Police say bomb was hidden under Awan Express train’s seat.
KARACHI: On Saturday, law enforcement successfully neutralized an improvised explosive device (IED) discovered on a train at the Cantonment Railway Station, which was en route from Peshawar to the port city, as reported by Geo News.
Upon receiving information about the bomb on the Awam Express, the bomb disposal squad promptly arrived at the station and safely defused the explosive device through a controlled blast. Authorities revealed that the bomb had been concealed beneath a seat in the Awan Express train.
Raja Umar Khattab, a senior officer from the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), suggested that a separatist group may have been behind the attempted sabotage. The bomb disposal unit described the explosive as being contained within a black and red school bag.
Syed Asad Raza, the Director General of Police (DIG) South, provided details about the bomb, stating that it weighed 5 kilograms, utilized 2 kilograms of explosives, and was connected to a “time device.” A motorcycle battery was reportedly employed for detonation. The potential target was identified as the northern part of Sindh, as the bomb’s timer was set for Friday at 12 pm, and the train was near Sukkur-Rohri Junction during that timeframe. The malfunctioning wire prevented the bomb from exploding at the designated time.
The DIG mentioned that the police were notified about the bomb one hour after the train arrived at the Cantt Station, with the report coming from railway staff. As of now, no case has been filed, and it will be registered at the Railway Police Cantt Station. DIG Raza added that CCTV footage from various train stations between Peshawar and Karachi is being obtained, and an investigation into the railway staff is also underway.
