Pakistan’s ranking improves by 7 spots in Transparency International Corruption index.

In Islamabad, where former prime ministers in crisis-ridden Pakistan face recurrent accusations of corruption, a recent report by Transparency International has provided a contrasting narrative. The South Asian nation, grappling with crises, has demonstrated a reduction in corruption compared to the preceding government. According to the Corruption Perceptions Index published by the Berlin-based corruption watchdog, Pakistan has ascended by seven positions, now positioned ahead of 46 other nations in the corruption index.

The most recent edition of the Corruption Perceptions Index, named ‘Corruption Perceptions Index 2023,’ has assigned Pakistan a ranking of 133 on a scale ranging from 1 to 180, showcasing an improvement in its standing this year.

The Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) assesses perceived levels of corruption in the public sector, drawing on information from over a dozen independent sources. The scale spans from zero to 100, where zero indicates high corruption, and 100 signifies a clean state.

In the previous year, Pakistan held the 140th position, unaltered from the year before, with a CPI score of 27. It’s noteworthy that neighboring India experienced a decline in its CPI score from 40 in 2022 to 39 in 2023.

The chief of Transparency International Pakistan highlighted positive developments in curbing corrupt practices within the country, attributing these improvements to enhanced governance and effective law enforcement.
