LAHORE: FIA freezes Moonis’ accounts, attaches properties in money laundering case: In a recent development, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has taken the step of freezing the bank accounts and seizing the properties of former federal minister Moonis Elahi, as confirmed in a compliance report submitted to the special court.
Moonis Elahi is currently under investigation for alleged involvement in money laundering.
During a previous court hearing, the central judge of the special court explicitly ordered the freezing of eight bank accounts and the attachment of six immovable properties owned by Moonis Elahi. This action was taken as part of the proclamation proceedings initiated against him.
The judge emphasized that if Moonis fails to personally appear before the court within 30 days after the proclamation is published, he will be declared a proclaimed offender.
According to documents presented by the FIA, Moonis is suspected of utilizing these bank accounts for the purpose of money laundering. Significant amounts of money were deposited and withdrawn from these accounts, with a report indicating that Moonis withdrew a total of Rs487.6 million from these accounts.
In the previous court proceedings, non-bailable arrest warrants were issued against Moonis, who was reported to be unavailable at both his residence in Barcelona, Spain, and his residence in Lahore.
In subsequent proceedings, the FIA authorities submitted an application requesting the attachment of properties belonging to Moonis, who is currently declared as an absconder. The application specified the eight bank accounts and six immovable properties associated with Moonis Elahi.
Concurrently, the FIA Director Lahore was assigned the task of submitting a compliance report regarding these actions, highlighting the commitment to a comprehensive and transparent legal process.
