Pak Afghan Torkham border crossing reopens today after 9 day closure.

The Torkham border, a crucial crossing and the most bustling trade route connecting Pakistan and Afghanistan, has resumed operations following a 9-day closure. This border crossing links Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province with Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. It was sealed on January 13 when Pakistani officials enforced a new policy requiring passports and visas from Afghan drivers, subsequently leading to the Afghan Taliban prohibiting Pakistani truckers from entering.

This recent closure is not the first occurrence of the Torkham border shutting down; it has experienced several closures in recent months, including a week-long closure in September 2023 due to clashes between opposing forces.

The reopening of the border by Pakistan is seen as a goodwill gesture, especially in the context of Islamabad’s recent efforts to expel undocumented foreigners, predominantly Afghan nationals, owing to Kabul’s perceived inaction against militants involved in cross-border attacks.

The decision to reopen the border was prompted by the significant number of stranded patients and vehicles on both sides, causing an undesirable situation for both countries. The closure left hundreds of trucks loaded with goods stranded at the western end of the renowned Khyber Pass.

Meanwhile, Afghan authorities have been informed that all necessary legal documentation for travelers must be completed during this period.
