Islamabad Weather Update: Capital shivers as cold wave tightens grip in January

Islamabad, the federal capital of Pakistan, grapples with the onset of cold weather and dense fog, resulting in a hazy yet challenging winter ambiance.

The Meteorological Department’s forecast for the next twelve hours predicts predominantly cold and dry conditions across the country, encompassing the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The latest advisory from the PMD indicates the prevalence of continental air over most regions, with a shallow westerly wave affecting western Balochistan.

Update on Islamabad’s Rainfall: There is no likelihood of showers in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, or other surrounding areas on either Tuesday or Wednesday.

Current Temperature in Islamabad: Amidst the brisk weather, the maximum temperature reached 20 degrees Celsius, and the mercury is anticipated to drop to single digits during the night. The humidity level in the capital is recorded at approximately 25%, with winds blowing at 8 km/h. The UV Index stands at 3, signifying moderate conditions, and visibility is around 4-5 km.

Air Quality in Islamabad: While major cities grapple with severe air pollution, the air quality in the federal capital is registered at 180, classified as “Very Unhealthy.” Sensitive groups are advised to avoid outdoor activities immediately, as health effects may be felt. Even healthy individuals might experience difficulty breathing and throat irritation, prompting consideration of staying indoors and rescheduling outdoor plans.

Weather Outlook for Pakistan: Expect mainly cold and dry weather across most parts of the country, with particularly cold conditions in the northern regions and north Balochistan. Fog and smog are likely to persist in the plains of Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and upper Sindh. However, there is a possibility of light rain or drizzle at isolated locations in western Balochistan and coastal areas of Makran.

Lowest Minimum Temperatures in Pakistan: Leh -11, Skardu -09, Gilgit, Gupis -06, Astore, Kalam, Kalat, and Srinagar -05.
