GUJRAT: On Friday, Ms. Qaisera Elahi, the wife of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) president and former Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi, along with her sister Sumaira Elahi, faced hindrance in filing their nomination papers. The police stationed at the office of the returning officer (RO) for NA-64 prevented them from entering the premises.

Party insiders revealed that Ms. Qaisera intended to submit her nomination papers for NA-64 (Gujrat-Kunjah), while her sister, Sumaira Elahi, was set to file papers for PP-34 (Dinga-Mungowal).

On a surprising note, Parvez Elahi’s nomination papers have been submitted for the NA-69 (Malakwal-Qadirabad) seat in Mandi Bahauddin. Nasir Iqbal Bosal, a former PML-N MNA, is also slated to contest from this constituency.

Interestingly, Parvez Elahi’s legal team filed nomination papers for PP-33 (Lalamusa city), a constituency where he has not contested any previous elections.

Close aide Mian Imran Masood, a former Punjab education minister who initially filed for PP-31 (Gujrat city), has also submitted papers for NA-65 (Lalamusa-Dinga). However, there are indications that he might withdraw from this constituency later.

Former federal minister Qamar Zaman Kaira from PPP, former PTI MNA Faizul Hassan Shah (who recently announced quitting PTI), and Hamza Qamar Kaira (son of Qamar Zaman Kaira) have all filed their nomination papers for NA-65. Additionally, Nasir Shah, a brother of Faizul Hassan Shah, and his two nephews have submitted papers for the same constituency.

Chaudhry Salik Hussain and his elder brother Shafay Hussain, both former federal ministers, have filed nominations for two constituencies each – Salik for NA-64 and PP-32 (Kunjah), and Shafay for PP-31 and PP-32.

Former MNA Nawabzada Ghazanfar Ali Gul and his son Nawabzada Haider Mehdi from PML-N, along with ex-PML-Q MNA Chaudhry Hussain Elahi, have filed papers for NA-63 (Jalalpur Jattan-Tanda).

Ex-PML-N MNA Abid Raza Kotla and his brother ex-MPA Shabeer Kotla have submitted papers for both NA-62 (Sara-i-Alamgir-Kharian) and PP-28 (Kotla). Chaudhry Musa Elahi, the son of former federal minister Chaudhry Wajahat Hussain, has also filed nominations for NA-62 against the Kotla brothers.

Gujrat PPP leader Mian Fakhar Mushtaq Pagganwala filed papers for PP-31 (Gujrat city), while North Punjab Jamaat-i-Islami emir Dr. Tariq Saleem and Gujrat JI district emir Ansar Mehmood Dhool advocate submitted their papers for PP-28 and PP-31, respectively.

Irfanuddin advocate, a former MPA, filed papers for PP-28 (Kotla), and former PTI ticket-holder Nasir Chappar submitted papers for PP-27 and PP-28. Chaudhry Ilyas, a two-time PTI ticket-holder from NA-62, and his son have also filed nominations for these constituencies.

A total of 155 nomination papers have been filed for four NA and eight PA seats in Gujrat district on Friday, and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has extended the deadline for filing papers until Dec 24, with the possibility of more submissions.
