225 school teachers asked to repay more than $280,000 in payroll error.

“We truly regret any distress or inconvenience and appreciate the hard work that every CMS employee does”

225 educators in a North Carolina school district are being requested to reimburse $1,250 in bonuses inadvertently included in their paychecks, as reported by individuals. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) district issued an apology to English instructors for a payroll error that occurred on January 12, with CMS identifying the issue on January 17 and notifying the teachers on January 18.

The district offers two options for repayment: the affected 225 instructors can opt for a payment plan with deductions spread over three months or choose to repay the bonus in a lump sum deducted from their February paycheck. CMS clarified that these payments were initially intended as incentives to attract new teachers to CMS schools.

In a statement found on WCNC, the district’s website mentioned, “We recognize the difficulties this error may have caused and are dedicated to working closely with each of the impacted teachers.” The statement continued, “We sincerely apologize for any distress or inconvenience and value the hard work of every CMS employee.”

According to information on the district’s website’s About CMS page, CMS operates 184 schools in Mecklenburg County, employing over 20,000 teachers, support personnel, and administrators.
